Dear partners,
Happy Spring, I am a retired Edward Jones financial advisor and limited partner, whose career spanned 30 years from 1990 to 2020. I am committed to our mutual moral duty to care for all our neighbors' human rights and freedoms, which is why I founded empathysurplus.com at retirement. We encourage our membership to engage their stakeholders and centers of influence to centralize empathy in constant public discourse.
In my case, Edward Jones is near and dear to my heart as a retiree client and a retired limited partner. Thus, my open letter appeals to other Edward Jones associates and clients to petition the firm to activate its Grassroots Task Force (GTF). An activated GTF would encourage employees and clients to call their legislators to protect our life, liberty, and property needed for a successful life and retirement from the lawless White House loser's corruption of the rule of law.
Ted Jones had profound empathy.
Ted Jones, son of the firm’s founder, Edward Jones, had profound empathy. He cared for all Americans, joined the Merchant Marines during World War II, and defended the Constitution against fascism. He cared for the American workers at Edward Jones and threatened to quit his father’s firm if his non-working sisters were allowed to become firm partners. Ted cared for rural Americans in central Missouri and Illinois as a Tuesday and Thursday broker in his VW van in the 60s and 70s. He also cared about poison-free communities and established the Katy Trail. He died the same year I joined the firm. Edward Jones managing partners must draw inspiration from their founder’s empathy to [a] cultivate empathy for all Americans and [b] activate their Grassroots Task Force to demand that all elected officials protect us from the lawless White House loser.
Beware of empathy erosion in business.
Empathy is the soul of democracy, human rights, and ethical businesses. Psychology Today magazine weighed in on April 15 on the empathy virtue or vice debate. Dr. Jennifer Fraser wrote, “While you might use your cognitive empathy to read someone like a book, understanding their thinking, feeling, and intending, if you can’t feel their pain, do not relate or respond on a brain level to their thoughts, emotions, and intentions, it might lead you to maltreat them. It could mean your affective empathy is eroded, which is how neuroscientist Simon Baron-Cohen1 documents psychopathic behaviour on a brain level.”
All firm policies have two brain components to make sense: the material nuts and bolts of the policy and the moral reasons2 that often go unstated, undergird the material. By not activating the firm’s Grassroots Task Force, the firm’s silence in the face of the lawless White House loser’s terrorism of Americans, some of whom are clients, points to empathy erosion, which is deadly for a brand that depends on empathic trust. I encourage you to overcome your fear, engage your empathy, and activate the GTF.
America’s Ideal
Our mutual American ideal is strong, diverse communities of nurturing families caring for humanity’s rights and freedoms through our businesses and other institutions’ protection of due process and the rule of law. The cruel wing of billionaires and their ring of accomplices inside our government paid lip service in the past to care about due process and the rule of law.
But their pretense of care is over. Cruelty is the point. The lawless White House loser’s terrorism outlined in Project 2025 has come for Edward Jones clients and our neighbors. None of us alone is safe from the lawless White House loser unless we stand together to protect Constitutional due process and the presumption of innocence.
Due Process and the Rule of Law Must Prevail.
Caring communities all over America contain Edward Jones branches. These communities are not immune to the terrors of Project 2025 without vigorously defending Constitutional protections, including due process and the presumption of innocence. According to the Los Angeles Times, 90% of the people ICE rounded up and deported to a torture prison in El Salvador, without due process, had no criminal record. Yet this regime illegally defied our 8th Amendment prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishment” and declares the disappearances will continue AND expand to include American citizens.
The firm could and should activate its Grassroots Task Force that encourages employees and clients to call their legislators to protect our life, liberty, and property needed for a successful life and retirement. The firm’s silence begs the question, “Why is the firm silent?” It’s not a good look. By being silent, is the firm putting the lawless White House loser first instead of the client?
Empathy and Ethics
Psychology Today’s Dr. Jennifer Fraser continued, “According to McGilchrist, empathy is your capacity to inhibit your ‘natural impulse to selfishness.” It is what makes you think twice about stealing from someone, hitting her, abandoning him, ignoring a colleague, or enjoying someone’s suffering. Psychologists Paul Babiak and Robert Hare describe those who lack empathy as “snakes in suits” when they are at work.”
Stop the “financial murders” at Social Security!
The New York Times reported last week that White House hooded thugs illegally changed the Social Security status of 6,300 LIVING green card holders to dead. Trump said this week that he plans to do the same to U.S. citizens he disfavors. Former Social Security commissioner and former Maryland Governor Mark O’Malley said, “It’s tantamount to financial murder,” because as soon as Social Security tells the world you’re dead, when you aren’t, your bank account is frozen. You lose your ability to care for yourself and those you love.
A caring business committed to the US Constitution and its stakeholders' rights and freedoms would mobilize to protect and empower its wealth creators, i.e., customers, employees, vendors, communities, etc., against billionaire cruelty and terror. In the case of Edward Jones, it would activate the Grassroots Task Force to encourage clients to call elected local, state, and federal officials to protect its residents from the terror of the lawless White House loser. The time is NOW.
