Juneteenth Press Release: Promoting human rights.
Empathy Surplus Network USA submits Communication on Engagement report to United Nations Global Compact: The USA Network doesn't promote human rights at the local level.
(Wilmington, Ohio, June 19, 2024) - Chuck Watts, CEO of Empathy Surplus Network USA (Empathy Surplus), announced today the submission of the organization’s 5th biannual Communication on Engagement report to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), celebrating its 10th year as a member.
We dated our report Juneteenth 2024 to highlight the importance of freedom, prosperity, and opportunities. These values aren’t possible to achieve without a firm, strong commitment to govern with empathy for and responsibility to humanity.
The report is entitled The USA Network doesn’t promote human rights at the local level. Or on their website: I spent five minutes trying to find the words “human rights” but failed because the USA Network doesn’t promote them there, either.
The first two of the ten principles focus specifically on human rights.
Empathy is the soul of democracy and ethical business. The UNGC website says it’s the “world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative,” whose members claim to support Ten Principles focused first and foremost on human rights. As members, we promise to align our operations around human rights.
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
The initiative was launched in 2000 by the Economic and Social Council of the UN at the urging of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
